NBPHE Exploring a Public Health Nursing Certification

Exciting New Certification on the Horizon for Public Health Nurses!

Are you a public health nurse eager to showcase your expertise? The National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) is working to develop a new certification just for you. A public health nursing certification!

Since 2008, NBPHE has been working to advance public health professionals through certification. Our goal is to highlight the unique skills needed in public health and ensuring these public health certificants remain at the forefront of the field and ready for future challenges through life long learning.

In 2015, we expanded our certification eligibility. At this time we began including professionals beyond those with formal academic training in public health to include practical and work place knowledge. Since then, over 100 public health nurses have received our Certified in Public Health (CPH) credential. Nevertheless, many public health nurses have asked for a certification focusing specifically on public health nursing science.

In response, we’re excited to be exploring the creation of a new specialty certification specifically for public health nurses. This certification will recognize the blend of foundational knowledge and practical skills in both public health and nursing sciences.

Establishing an Advisory Committee

Given these points, NBPHE has formed a public health nursing certification advisory committee to lead this effort. Our first steps include:

  • Identifying key organizations for collaboration
  • Establishing preliminary eligibility requirements
  • Determining the certification process

Additionally, we plan on initiating a job task analysis for late 2024. This analysis will define the scope and standards of the new certification, ensuring it reflects public health nursing competencies accurately.

We're thrilled about this project and are committed to developing a certification that will showcase your expertise and advance public health nursing.
